RAB detains ABT member in Sylhet: Police

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members detained a suspected member of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Sylhet city on Wednesday night, said police.

The arrested identified as Shafayet Ahmed Chowdhury, son of Kawser Ahmed Chowdhury of Gonipur village in Jakiganj upazila of Sylhet, is a second-year student of English department at Sylhet International University.

A team of RAB-2 arrested Shafayet from his house at Monipuripara in the city around 10:00pm, said Selim Mia, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, on Thursday.

Later, he was sent to Dhaka, he added.

The OC further said the RAB men seized 15 books on jihad, a training manual, a passport, a mobile phone, a laptop and leaflets from his possession.

According to police, RAB-2 got information about Shafayet’s involvement with ABT in confessional statements from three ABT men arrested on 29 January.
