Air quality improves in Dhaka

The air of Bangladesh capital Dhaka shows a sign of improvement as it scored 90 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Thursday morning.

It ranked the 21st worst in the list of poor air cities.

Earlier, on Monday, it had ranked the worst in the list with an score of 190.

India's Delhi ranked the worst with an AQI value of 176 in the independent live air-quality index monitor while Vietnam's Hanoi, China's Chengdu and Shenyang followed with scores 172,167 and 161 respectively.

When the AQI value is between 51 and 100, active children and adult and people with respiratory diseases are advised to limit prolonged outdoor excursion, according to UNB.

Regarding the recent improved air, the news agency says Bangladesh sees significant cut down in air pollution in Dhaka as it halted mass transport, and non-essential services and restricted movement of people and vehicles to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

Earlier, Dhaka topped the worst air city list on 9, 14, 18, 19, 24 and 25 February. It had also ranked the worst on 17 and 23 November, 26 December and 6, 29, 31 January.

The city has been continuously staying within the five most polluted cities around the world.

The AQI is a tool for measuring daily air quality of any city or country. It refers to the degree of pollution or cleanliness.
