Retake the dubious DU admission exam

There have been controversies over Dhaka University admission test every year. The honours first year admission exams for various faculties were fairly smooth this time except the ‘D’ unit test. The vice chancellor even admitted that the allegations of question paper leak might be true.

The VC said that the investigation committee found evidence of digital fraud and the law enforcement detained several over the charge. No one would be allowed to get away with this scam, he added.

The VC or the university authorities, however, offered no guidance to the candidates who failed to get admission into the university due to the question leaks. This has agitated among the general candidates.

A third year law students has started a hunger strike, protesting the fraud and has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after falling sick.

The student demanded immediate postponement of the test and the leaders and activists of the quota reform movement also announced their solidarity with his demand.

According to the Prothom Alo report, the University's 'D' unit admission test was held on 12 October and the results were published on 16 October. A total of 26.21 per cent of the students passed the exam.

Among them, 75 ranked in first 100 could not even pass the entrance test for other units.  A candidate got 114.30 out of 120 in ‘D’ unit while he got only 34.32 in ‘C’ unit admission test held on 14 September.

The question papers for admission tests in different faculties are not very different. English, Bangla and general knowledge are almost same for all units.

It is unbelievable that a candidate secured 90 per cent in one test and 40 per cent in another.

Such a difference occurred due the question paper leaks in ‘D’ unit admission test held on 12 October.

As many as 72 questions were leaked on social media within at around 9:17am before the test begun. The handwritten leaked questions matched the actual question paper. The leaked paper was easily accessible to some of the candidates. Therefore, it is assumed that those who came up with incredible results in the admission testhad access to the leaked questions.

The dean or the VC have nothing to say about the students who could not pass the test due the question paper leaks.

If they  acknowledged that there has been digital fraud in the admission test, it cannot be denied that many took advantage of this and many have been victims.

Therefore, the right thing to do would be to immediately cancel the test of ‘D’ unit and retake it.

Additionally, the university authorities should look into how the question paper reached the unscrupulous racket and whether anyone within the administration was involved in the question paper leak.
