Ctg flyover collapse case trial begins

The trial process in the Bahaddarhat Flyover collapse case in Chittagong began on Wednesday.
Chittagong metropolitan sessions judge M Mujbiur Rahman framed charges against eight accused of the case at about 12:30pm on Wednesday.

The accused are flyover project manager Giasuddin, supervision engineer Manjurul Islam and contracting firm officers and staff Abdul Jalil, Aminur Rahman, Abdul Hye, Mossharraf Hossain, Shahjahan Ali and Rafiqul Islam. 

The court also fixed July 16 for giving depositions of the witnesses.

Prosecution lawyer Fakruddin Chowdhury told Prothom Alo Chandgaon police submitted a charge sheet against 8 accused, skipping the names of 17 accused mentioned in the case statement, on October 24, 2013.   

No-confidence petition was submitted to the court on June 3, 2014 against the charge sheet. The court framed charges against 8 accused rejecting the no confidence petition on Wednesday. The court also rejected the appeal of accused seeking acquittal from the charges.

The eight accused, freed on bail so far, except Aminur Rahman were present in the court. Amin's lawyer submitted a plea seeking time, but the court scrapped the appeal and issued arrest warrant against him.

On Novemeber 24, 2012, a total of 16 people were killed as concrete girders of the under construction Bahaddarhat flyover collapsed on them. Chandgaon police sub-inspector (SI) Abul Kalam Azad filed a case on November 26 in this connection. The case was filed against 25 people including Chittagong Development Authority chairman Abdus Salam, executive engineer and flyover project director AAM Habibur Rahman and contracting firm managing director Abdur Rajjak.
