A sub-inspector of Mohammadpur police station was closed on Monday on charge of threatening a Bangladesh Bank official with death as a tactic to extort money from him.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials confirmed the news to Prothom Alo.
The SI, Masud Shikder, and some constables on Saturday night detained Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabbi in Mohammadpur in the capital claiming that Rabbi was carrying Yaba, according to the victim.
Rabby alleged that a constable caught him up from behind around 11:00pm on Saturday when he was walking down a street in Mohammadpur on his way to his Kalyanpur residence from the residence of one of his aunts.
“You have Yaba in your possession,” the policeman shouted at him and took him to SI Masud Shikder and the SI raised the same allegation.
As Rabby refused the claim, the policemen took him to a police van and tortured brutally demanding Tk 0.5 million.
The policemen allegedly threatened that Rabby would be killed in “crossfire” should he refuse to give the police Tk 0.5 million.
At one stage, the police van carrying Rabby roamed different city streets in search of Yaba so that the police could show Rabby with Yaba, but the police attempt went in vain.
Then Rabby was taken to the Mohammadpur police station where, Rabby alleged, the policemen tortured him to give the money, as well.
On Sunday, Rabby filed a written allegation against SI Masud Shikhder with the Mohammadpur police station.
SI Masud Shikhder, however, denied the allegation.
