Sinha Rashed’s death an isolated incident, say army chief and IGP

Chief of army staff general Aziz Ahmed and Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed on Wednesday told a joint press briefing that the murder of retired major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan, killed in police firing, is a stray incident.

The top brass of the forces also said the incident would not jeopardize the relation between the army and police.

“Army and police have always been working together. Both the forces are shocked at the incident. I want to give a message through you that we want to see it as a stray incident," army chief Aziz Ahmed told the press briefing held in Cox’s Bazar.

General Aziz said prime minister Sheikh Hasina assured slain major Rashed’s mother of proper investigation into the incident and a joint inquiry team has been formed to investigate the killing of Rashed at the behest of the prime minister.

Both the forces have trust on the probe body, he added.

Urging all not to do anything that could possibly endanger the relation between the forces, the army chief said, “We want to unequivocally say that nothing will happen that can sour the relation between the two forces.”

IGP Benazir Ahmed said those who are trying to provoke would not be successful.

He said the death of Sinha would not put any negative impact on relations between the army and police which is based on mutual respect and trust.

Benazir said the probe body would investigate the incident with transparency and action will be taken based on the findings of investigation.

Retired major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan, 36, was killed in police firing at a marine drive check post in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazaar on the night of 31 July.
