Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Saturday when the elections will be held depends on the July Charter.
He said, “Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus have already said elections might be held within December. In that case, we will be able to implement several recommendations, and the political party who will come to power later will implement the remaining ones.”
Shafiqul Alam said this while speaking to the media at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka around 2:45 pm prior to the dialogue between the chief adviser and National Consensus Commission chief Muhammad Yunus and various political parties.
Explaining the July Charter, Shafiqul Alam said, “Dialogue will be held with political parties on the details of the reports of six reform commissions. We expect all political parties will sign the decision that the political parties will reach through a consensus, and that will be July Charter.”
The press secretary opined it is possible to implement many recommendations of the reform commissions without consulting the political parties, but reform commissions will discuss with political parties where a key consensus is necessary.
“Today’s dialogue is the introduction to the restructure of Bangladesh in post-July mass uprising, the potential political resolution and the way of democratic transition,” Shafiqul Alam said.
On Thursday, the interim government formed the seven-member 'National Consensus Commission', headed by professor Muhammad Yunus, to discuss the recommendations placed by the six reform commissions aimed at reaching a consensus on a number of political, constitutional and electoral reform agenda.
The other members of the commission are prof Ali Riaz, head of the constitution reform commission; Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, head of public administration reform commission; Safar Raj Hossain, head of police reform commission; Badiul Alam Majumder, head of election reform commission; justice Emdadul Haque, head of judiciary reform commission; and Iftekharuzzaman, head of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) reform commission.
The National Consensus Commission has a deadline of six months to reach a consensus among the political parties. The Chief Adviser's Office (CAO) is providing secretarial service to the commission.
