Garbage truck kills city cleaner in Dhaka

A cleaning worker was killed as a refuse collection vehicle (RCV) of the city corporation ran over her early Sunday.

The incident took place the capital’s Mohakhali on around 2:00am on Sunday.

The deceased was Shikha Rani, 55, a cleaner of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Quoting witnesses, Inspector (investigation) of Tejgaon police station Shah Alam a garbage truck hit Shikha Rani while she was cleaning the road at the end-point of the flyover in Mohakhali area.

A case was filed against an unknown driver and a manhunt is underway to catch him, he addd.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

According to the hospital sources, the woman lived with her family in Shattala slum of Mohakhali.

Earlier on 24 November last year, Naim Hasan, a 17-year-student of Notre Dame College, was killed when a RCV of Dhaka South City Corporation hit him in Gulistan area on his way to the college.

The next day, Md Ahsan Kabir Khan, a former employee of Prothom Alo, died on the spot after a RCV of Dhaka North City Corporation ran over him in front of Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in the capital’s Panthapath.

An elderly women sustained injuries after being hit by a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation.

The series of incidents sparked protest for road safety by the students who had been demonstrating in demand of half fare at public transport.
