The shipping ministry has decided to shift the ferry terminal to avoid repeated collisions between ferries and the pillars of the under-construction Padma bridge.

The ministry has also imposed an embargo on Roll-on Roll-off (Ro Ro) ferries on the route between Banglabazar of Madaripur and Shimulia of Munshiganj.

The ministry came up with this decision on Friday following the collisions between ferries and pillars four times in a row within a month.

A ferry rammed into the under-construction Padma bridge on its way from Banglabazar to Shimulia on Friday morning.

The vessel, Kakoli, hit pillar 10 of the bridge around 6:45am today, Friday, Padma bridge project’s executive engineer Md Abdul Kader told Prothom Alo.

This was second such incident with the pillar in four days and fourth within a month.
