Former caretaker government adviser Sultana Kamal has urged the people to keep faith in the search committee formed to propose prospective election commissioners to the president.

She emphasised the importance of coming out of the crisis of confidence in the search committee after coming out of the meeting between the committee members and a dozen of “distinguished citizens” on Monday.

“The primary objective of our views exchange meeting was to get an idea what type of individuals the people want to see as election commissioners,” Sultana Kamal, one of the dozen citizens, told waiting newsmen.

“Those who will be able to perform their duty transparently, honestly and competently should be recommended as election commissioners.”

When her attention was drawn to the crisis of confidence in the search committee, Sultana Kamal said, “This crisis of confidence is also partial. Some lack the confidence [in the committee] and some not. We’ll not be able to move forward if we stick to the crisis of confidence.”

"The search committee members are very well-respected persons. It is the people’s moral duty to keep faith in the committee as well," she expressed her views.

She further said, “Look, the election is foiled neither by the election commission nor by the search committee. If the elections are not transparent or held in abnormal manner; it is the political parties which should shoulder the primary responsibility. Lack of firm resolution of us, the people, also led to the foiling of elections.”
