4200-kg formalin-laced mango destroyed in Rajshahi

A mobile court has destroyed 4200 kilograms of mango mixed with formalin and carbide and fined
six traders Tk 1.13 lakh at Baneshwar and Biraldaha mango markets under Puthiya upazila in Rajshahi on Saturday.

In Baneshwar Bazar, the traders got locked into a violent clash with police during the mobile court operation, said Puthiya police officer-in-charge SM Bazlur Rahman.

The OC said the district administration conducted a mobile court led by executive magistrates Sheikh Hafizur Rahman and Alamgir Kabir at Baneshwar Bazar to prevent mixing of formalin and carbide in mangos.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Rashedul Haque and Puthiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khandaker Farhad Ahmed were present there.

The court found presence of formalin and carbide in mangos and fined four traders — Golam Mostofa, Zahidul Islam, Abdul Motaleb and Nasirul Islam — Tk 13,000. The court also seized 1000 kilograms of chemically treated mangos and destroyed those.

In protest against the destruction, the traders became agitated and tried to put barricade on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway and
ransack vehicles that led to a violent clash with police.

Police fired 15 blank shot to bring the situation under control.

The court also conducted raids at Biraldaha Bazar and seized 3200 kilograms of mango mixed with formalin and fined two businessmen — Abul Kalam Azad and Atahar Ali — and fined them Tk 1 lakh.
