BRAC University students continue protest over ‘assaulting teacher’

Students of BRAC University have been protesting in front of their Mohakhali campus against the university management, over the sacking and ‘assaulting’ of a law teacher.

The agitated students said Farhan Uddin Ahmed, a law teacher recruited on contractual terms, was called to the human resources department on Sunday and handed documents for the immediate termination of his contract with the university.

When Farhan refused to take the termination papers, several officials of the registrar’s department took away his identity card and attacked him physically, they added.

Since Sunday, students of several departments, including the law department, have been boycotting classes and exams, and protesting against the university management.

The agitated students on Tuesday observed a sit-in in front of the Mohakhali main campus, chanting, ‘bring back Farhan sir’, ‘we want justice’, and ‘the registrar must resign.’.

Some students also alleged the university authorities have threatened them to stop their protest, otherwise they will face the music.

When contacted, the management declined to comment on that.

A law student told Prothom Alo that at a meeting with the vice-chancellor, the students demanded the resignation of the registrar and two assistant officials.

The VC assured the protesting students that a probe committee would be formed to look into the incident.

But no such committee has yet been formed, said the students.
