The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a High Court order that ordered shutdown of all activities of privately run Darul Ihsan University.
The four-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order rejecting a petition filed by Darul Ihsan University authorities seeking a stay on the HC order.
Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud and Barrister Khairul Alam Chowdhury argued for Darul Ihsan University while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
Talking to reporters, Mahbubey Alam said, "Darul Ihsan University cannot run its activities in the country following the order of the apex court. It’s a message for other universities as the court is in hard line in connection with the irregularities of any university."
He said the Appellate Division will provide some directives in observation of the verdict.
On July 25 last, the HC gave some directives about LLB course following a writ petition.
The court also ordered the shutdown of all activities of Darul Ihsan University.
One day after the directives of the HC, the government ordered the complete shutdown of Darul Ihsan University along with outer campuses of other private universities.
Later, Darul Ihsan University appealed with the Appellate Division challenging the HC order.
Earlier, in October 2010, the government formed a judicial investigation body, headed by Justice Kazi Ebadul Haque, to investigate allegations of irregularities-corruption, ownership dispute and outer campus of the Darul Ihsan University.
In March 2013, the investigation committee submitted its report to the Ministry of Education recommending shutdown of the university.
