Govt to provide low-cost housing for slum-dwellers

Slum dwellers and low income people can potentially own a flat of 350 square meters or 465 square meters depositing daily instalments of Tk 250 or Tk 275 respectively in bank.

National Housing Authority (NHA) will build the flats under two projects at a cost of Tk 216 crore.

This was revealed by the Housing and Public Works minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain while addressing a programme at Kalsi crossing of Mirpur on Wednesday. The programme was organised to inaugurate several projects of NHA in the area.

The Minister said each flat will be consisting of two bed rooms, one drawing, kitchen and bathroom each. Those who will get allotment of a flat, will be owner paying installments, he said, adding that the government has taken up the projects to develop the life standard of slum dwellers as well as low income people. Slums will be removed from the city in phases, by allotting flats to the slum dwellers.

Earlier, the Minister formally inaugurated the project to build 40 residential buildings as well as construction of boundary wall for a 168 acres plot of land at Mirpur  9.

Nine 6-storey buildings consisting of 432 flats, each 350 square meters for 2600 slum dwellers will be built at Bauniabadh of Mirpur-11 under a project, while 27 6-storey buildings consisting of 648 flats (each 465 square meters) will be built in the same section under another project.

Besides, construction of ten 14-storey buildings consisting of 1040 flats will be completed at a cost of Tk 66.70 crore for low and middle income people at Mirpur section 9.
