COVID-19 fallout: Man 'commits suicide failing to feed family'

Unable to find work amid coronavirus outbreak, a man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself as his family was starving for a few days in Dalbhanga village in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah on Tuesday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Wahidul Islam, 30, father of four children of the village and a van-puller by profession.

Quoting family members, sub-inspector Jamir Hossain of Maheshpur Police Station, said the family of six people has been starving for the last one week amid the nationwide shutdown following the coronavirus pandemic.

They did not receive any relief from any organisation or government. On Tuesday night, Wahidul took his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house. Additional superintendent (Kotchandpur circle) of police said the man was very poor and was debt-ridded.

He might have committed suicide failing to repay the debt money, he said.
