A mobile court on Wednesday sentenced a rice dealer and a trader to one month in jail each in Singra upazila of Natore for stealing rice allocated to be sold among the ultra-poor through OMS (open market sale) process.
The rice was meant to be sold at Tk 10 per kg.
The convicted are -- rice dealer Awal Hossain Swapan and rice trader Rahman Ali, reports news agency UNB.
Upazila executive officer Nasreen Banu said Swapan got allotment of 1440kg rice. “But instead of selling it among the poor he sold it to Rahmat.”
A mobile court led by the UNO handed down the verdict against them. It also cancelled dealership of Swapan.
