Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Emajuddin Ahamed on Tuesday claimed that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia has decided to not keep Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in the BNP-led 20-party opposition alliance in “that manner.”
The pro-BNP political analyst also said Jamaat has “now been a burden for the alliance.”
Emajuddin told a discussion meeting organised by Abdul Kader Siddique’s Krishak Sramik Janata League at the National Press Club.
Laying emphasis on a national unity in the wake of recent development in the country, Emajuddin said, “One party stands out to be an obstacle towards forging a national unity. The government can ban the party anytime if it wants. She [Khaleda] has decided that there is no need any more to keep this party [Jamaat] in the 20-party alliance. It has been a burden.”
He said a large chunk of Jamaat activists is of the post-liberation war generation. “They have no links with war crimes. They themselves will not want the move for a national unity to fail. They will be able to take decisions on rationales.”
