Chamber court suspends bail granted to Selina Hayat Ivy in 5 cases

The Appellate Division’s chamber court has suspended the High Court bail granted to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases, including a murder case.

At the same time, the five separate appeals filed by the state against her bail have been scheduled for hearing before the regular bench of the Appellate Division on 17 November. Chamber judge Md Rezaul Haque issued the order today, Wednesday.

Selina Hayat Ivy, who is in prison, had been granted bail by the High Court on 9 November in five separate cases, including charges of murder and grievous bodily harm related to the anti-discrimination movement.

Among the five cases, three involve murder charges and two involve charges of grievous bodily harm.

On 10 November, the state filed separate petitions seeking the suspension of bail in three of the cases, which were scheduled for hearing in the chamber court that day. The court marked the matter as 'not today' (i.e., not heard on 10 November).

For the other two cases, the state also filed separate petitions seeking suspension of bail. Today, all five separate petitions filed by the state to suspend Ivy’s bail were placed on the chamber court’s agenda for hearing.

At the hearing, additional attorney General Anik R Haque represented the state, while senior lawyer Sara Hossain and lawyer SM Hridoy Rahman appeared for Ivy.

Later, SM Hridoy Rahman told Prothom Alo that the chamber court has suspended the High Court bail in the five cases. The court scheduled the hearing of the state’s petitions before the regular bench of the Appellate Division (Court No. 2) on 17 November.

On the early morning of 9 May this year, police arrested Ivy from her residence in Devog, Narayanganj city. She was later shown as arrested in five separate cases, including three murder cases and two attempted murder cases filed in connection with the anti-discrimination student-peoples' movement.

Ivy served as mayor of Narayanganj Municipality from 2003 to 2011. She later won three consecutive elections of the newly formed Narayanganj City Corporation.
