Chittagong, Payra ports advised to hoist signal No 7

As the severe cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ over the northwest of Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas moved north-eastwards over the same area, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Tuesday advised maritime ports of Payra and Chattogram to hoist danger signal No 7.

The coastal districts of Barisal, Patuakhali, Bhola, Borguna, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Bhola and their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal No seven, the DMD said in a special weather bulletin issued at 9:30am on Tuesday.

Maritime ports of Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist danger signal No 6 and 5 respectively.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice.

‘Hamoon’ may cross Barishal, Chattogram coast near Bhola

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ may cross Barishal and Chattogram coasts near Bhola by Wednesday morning to noon as a cyclonic storm, the met office said in its special weather bulletin.

Cyclone ‘Hamoon’ was centred at 9:00am on Tuesday about 445 km west-southwest of Chattogram port, 410 Km west-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 325 km southwest of Mongla port and 310 km southwest of Payra port.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the storm centre is about 90 KPH rising to 110 KPH in gusts and squalls. Sea will remain high near the severe cyclone centre.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall

The BMD said, under the peripheral effect of the severe cyclonic storm, heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy (289mm) rainfall with gusty and squally wind may continue over the north Bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh.

The low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide under the peripheral effect of the severe cyclone and steep pressure gradient, according to the weather bulletin.

Under the influence of severe cyclone, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience of heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy rainfall (289 mm).

Due to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Chattogram.
