Leaving its “exclusively western” vive behind, gown is slowly making its mark in the Bangladeshi fashion scene. The local boutique houses are experimenting with traditional motifs to incorporate in gown designs, especially considering the upcoming Eid.
Designers are bringing out a large selection of gowns in this Eid which will complement the occasion to the T. Considering the rainy season, ankle length gowns, rather than floor touch gowns are getting preference by the designers.
“Georgette, chiffon, net, linen, net - these light fabrics are mostly being used in our designs,” said Maya Rahman, designer of fashion house Dresidel. “We're using tie-dye to maintain the traditional vive in our designs. Given the rainy season, bright colours are getting preference, but we are also focussing on dark colours considering the night time functions during Eid,” she added.
Fashion house Anjan's is bringing a line of traditional Kameez that is styled like gowns. “These Kameez look just like gowns. For younger women, linen is the perfect fabrics, while silk complements the older women better,” said Anjan's designer Shahin Ahmed.
Georgette, chiffon, crept silk and linen gowns, with a range of distinctive designs, can complement just about any body type, designers said.
“Any woman can look gorgeous in gowns, only if she has the confidence to pull off the look,” said Maria Sultana, chief designer of fashion house Mumu Maria. Women of any age and body type can try experimenting with different cuts and shapes of gowns, she added.
She shared some tips on selecting the right type of gown as per body type:
For women who are slightly overweight, half-body style or princess line style gowns can give a slimmer, taller look.
For short women, monotone gowns with asymmetrical hemlines can do wonder. In case of multicoloured gowns, make sure that the colours are not that far apart.
For svelte body types, multiple soft, bright colours, big floral motifs are the perfect choice.
