Seven years, indeed a long time to lead a cricket team. Salma Khatun, the captain of the Bangladesh national women cricket team, is doing this job with consistency for seven years.
How did Salma make it possible?
“I always tried to be well-behaved and get along with everyone. May be that is the reason everybody likes me,” said Salma
Narrating the story of her early life, Salma took a quick trip down to the memory lane.
The youngest among the four siblings, Salma bagged all the medals and trophies of the tournaments of her area. She was the lone girl in 11-player cricket squad of her area.
Her father never impeded her way to be a cricketer. He died in 2002. Salma feels a void as her father couldn’t see his daughter shining.
Salma became the captain of national women cricket team in 2008.
Reminiscing about those days, the team leader said, “That was the very best day of my life. The credit goes to my coach Ehsan sir. Without him I wouldn’t have been here. He used to say the team captain should be calm in the field as they have to take important decisions.”
Like Shakib Al Hasan, Salma too tops all-rounder ranking in women cricket. In her words: “Shakib is my favorite player. It is a great honour for me to secure the top position like him. Shakib posted a congratulatory note for me on Facebook. It’s hard to explain how I felt about it.”
“Sachin Tendulkar inspired me in my childhood days. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mushfiqur Rahim are great players too. However, as a captain, Mushfiqur Rahim gets my vote,” she added.
Salma prefers not to spend time on Facebook though she has a number of fan pages and accounts on her name in the social networking site. She spends her free times watching matches on TV to hone her skills.
