Bangladesh enters 5G era with limited offering

State-run mobile phone operator Teletalk has launched the fifth-generation (5G) of mobile network service in six sites of the country on a trial basis on Sunday, reports UNB.

Prime minister's ict affairs advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the service virtually at the ‘New Era with 5G’ program held at Radisson Blue Hotel on the eve of the fifth Digital Bangladesh Day.

Initially the service will be provided at the Prime Minister's Office, parliament, secretariat, Bangabandhu Museum at Dhanmondi 32, Tungipara in Gopalganj, and the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

Eventually 200 more important areas of Dhaka will be brought under the 5G service coverage.

In March 2022, following auction of the frequency, three private mobile operators will roll out the service.

Important industrial and special economic zones in the country will also be brought under the service through Teletalk and Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) by 2020.

Bangladesh has rolled out the 5G service as the ninth country around the globe.

In theory, 5G is likely to reach speeds that are 20 times faster than 4G, and can provide an extremely stable and fast connection.

Bangladesh can avail facilities like critical mission service, smart grid, smart home, smart city and smart factory using artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, robotics, big data, block chain, human to machine and machine to human techonologies and devices using the faster connectivity of 5G.

Posts and Telecommunications minister Mustafa Jabbar, AKM Rahamatullah, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Posts and Telecommunications ministry, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Shyam Sunder Sikder, and Managing Director of Teletalk Sahab Uddin was present at the program.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also shared inspiring notes at the inaugural programme through a video message.
