A Jubo League activist was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Sarkar Hat area of Hathazari upazila in Chittagong on Thursday night, reports news agency UNB.
The deceased is Nure Elahi Jewel, 32, supporter of Awami League (AL)-backed candidate Nurul Afsar.
Quoting locals, Hathazari police officer in-charge Ismail said Thursday was the last day of electioneering ahead of the union parishad (UP) polls in the upazila, scheduled to be held on 7 May.
The supporters of AL-backed candidate Nurul Afsar were preparing a motorcade around 9:30pm as part of the electioneering when some unidentified assailants fired gunshots at them, leaving Nure Elahi Jewel injured, he added.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued Jewel.
As the injured was whisked off to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) doctors declared him dead.
However, additional superintendent of police (North) Md Mostafizur Rahman said the deceased received the injuries as a bullet was misfired from a gun which was being swayed unmindfully by one of his fellow supporters of the AL-candidate.
Police has launched a drive to recover the gun, he added.
