
A special court in Khulna on Thursday sentenced eight people, including ex-Jatiya Party (Monju) MP from Jessore-4 MM Aminuddin, to life term imprisonment for killing Akram Ali Mollah in Avoynagar upazila of Jessore more than 10 years ago.
Khulna divisional speedy tribunal judge MA Rob Hawlader handed down the verdict, reports UNB news agency.
The other convicts are Avoynagar upazila BNP general secretary Quazi Golam Haider W, Noapara municipality ex-councillor and ex-JCD leader Sheikh Asadullah Asad, Avoynagar upazila unit JCD president Molla Habibur Rahman Habib, Avoynagar Press Club general secretary Nazrul Islam Mallik, Noapara Municipality Jubo Dal leader Syed Ali Misri, its general secretary GM Bachchu and Jubo Dal activists Yousha.
According to the prosecution, Akram Ali, the then health and family planning officer of the upazila, was killed in a bomb attack carried out by the accused in front of his house near Avoynagar Upazila Health Complex about 10:00pm on 13 August 2006.
Victim’s brother M Ashraf Ali then filed a case with Avoynagar police station in this connection.
On 15 November 2008, the investigation officer of the case submitted the chargesheet accusing 11 people.
The home ministry on 18 May transferred the case to Khulna Divisional Speedy Tribunal for its quick disposal.
After examining the records and witnesses, the special court judge handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused as the charges brought against them could not be proved.
The acquitted people are Noapara Jubo Dal leaders Abdur Rashid, Sajjad Hossain and Shariful Islam Sharif.
