The High Court has directed owners of each of the tanneries in the city's Hazaribagh area to pay Tk 50,000 daily in compensation until they relocate their industries to Savar.

An HC bench, comprising justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and justice AKM Shahidul Haque, passed the order on Thursday.
Lawyer Manzil Morshed, who filed the writ petition with the HC, confirmed this to Prothom Alo.

The lawyer said the owners will have to pay the compensation to state coffer.

The High Court passed an order for shifting the tanneries to Savar three years back. Later, the apex court asked the tannery authorities to submit a list of the industries, which failed to shift their establishments to Savar. Accordingly, a list of 155 tanneries, which have been operating at Hazaribagh violating HC order, was submitted to the apex court, said the lawyer.
Meanwhile, only one tannery owner shifted his establishment to Savar.

The HC has also directed the tannery authorities to submit a report on whether the tannery owners have paid the compensation by July 17, lawyer Manzil Morshed further said.
