HC Rejects Writ Petition

Islam to stay state religion

Islam will remain state religion in the constitution of Bangladesh as the High Court on Monday set aside a writ petition challenging its legality.

An HC special bench led by justice Naima Haider, justice Kazi Rezaul Haque and justice M Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing the petition.

The court, in its order, observed that the petitioner has no legal standing to file such a petition, which challenged the legality of Islam's status as state religion in the constitution.

Islam was inserted into the constitution as state religion through the 8th amendment brought about by the Ershad regime in 1988.
