Police on Thursday arrested Jatiya Party member of parliament to Mymensingh 7 (Trishal) constituency MA Hannan from his Gulshan residence on charge of crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.
MA Hannan’s son Sazzad was also arrested along with his father but police said nothing about the charge on which he was arrested.
Assistant police commissioner (Gulshan zone) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest to Prothom Alo.
Police arrested the JP MP and his son after Rahima Khatun, widow of a freedom fighter, on 19 May filed a case against three persons for their involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 War of Liberation.
The International Crimes Tribunal issued the arrest warrant taking the case into cognisance against MA Hannan, Fakruzzaman and Golam Rabbani who were allegedly members of anti-liberation wing Al-Badr auxiliary force during the country's Liberation War in 1971.
The case statement said MA Hannan, who was a Peace Committee leader in 1971, along with two of his accomplices Fakruzzaman and Golam Rabbani, picked up freedom fighter Abdur Rahman from his Munshipara village of Trishal and tortured him to death at a torture camp of Pakistani occupation force in Bangladesh Agricultural University.
Besides, police detained three other persons in connection with the same case. The detainees are Harmuz Ali, Mizanur Rahman alias Mintu and Golam Sabbir.
