A slum eviction drive in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur area turned violent when the slum dwellers swooped on the authorities on Thursday morning.
Witnesses said the slum dwellers attacked the officials of the Housing and Building Research Institute under the housing and public works ministry when they went for slum eviction around 10:45 am.
Agitated locals threw brickbats on the government men and police while the law enforcement personnel fired several rounds of tear gas to control the situation.
Tension was mounting in the area when the report was being filed around 11:45 am.
Lawyer Obonti Nurul of Ain o Shalish Kendra said at least 20,000 people stay in Kalyanpur slum which is the land of housing and public works ministry.
The government filed a writ with the court for the slum eviction, but the court issued a stay order which is still effective.
