Nasirnagar attack ‘mastermind’ released on bail

The suspected mastermind of the attacks on the Hindu community in Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria was released on bail on Thursday afternoon after serving five months and 10 days in jail, reports UNB.
Dewan Atiqur Rahan Ankhi, the suspended chairman of Haripur union parishad, was released from the district jail following a High Court order, said Mahbubur Rahman, inspector of district judge's court police.
The inspector said the bail order reached Brahmanbaria court on Thursday and later sent it to the district jail.

On 30 October 2016, an unruly mob equipped with sharp weapons went berserk and demolished a number of Hindu temples and nearly 100 houses in Nasirnagar upazila following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the Holy Kaaba.

On 5 January 2017, the prime accused in the barbaric attack was arrested from Bhatara area in Dhaka. Later, he was remanded for several times.

Later on 15 January, the local government division suspended him from the post of chairman of Haripur union parishad.
