Police on Monday claimed to have cracked the murder case of Pathao rider Milon who was slaughtered by his ride-taker on Malibagh-Mouchak flyover on 26 August, saying they arrested the killer, reports UNB.
Additional commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Abdul Baten revealed the information while speaking at a press conference at the DMP media centre around 1:00pm.
He said law enforcers arrested the killer - Nuruddin Sumon alias Nuruzzaman Opu, 30 -- from the city's Shahjahanpur area around 12:00am on Monday. Later, they recovered the motorcycle and the mobile set of the victim as per the information gleaned from him.
Summon confessed to his involvement in the murder of Milon, Baten said.
About the murder, the police officer said Milon might have not been killed had he avoided the deserted flyover in the early hours.
On the day, Sumon made a deal with Milon for a ride to Gulistan from Malibagh for Tk 50.
On their way to the destination, Sumon asked the rider to stop his motorcycle for lighting cigarette when they were on the Malibagh-Mouchak flyover.
There, they engaged in a scuffle when the ride-taker said he would drive the motorcycle.
At one stage, Sumon slit Milon's throat with a knife and fled the scene riding the motorcycle.
Citing Sumon, the police official said Milon was shouting loudly saying ''save me'' when he was fleeing towards Shahjahanpur. But he did not know that Milon died.
Atiqur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of Motijheel zone, said Sumon had no other intention but to hijack the motorcycle. He also took the mobile phone along with him.
Later, he sold the mobile set to a security guard named Mosharraf Hossain for Tk 2,500.
Law enforcers tracked the mobile phone using its IMEI number and detained Mosharraf. According to the information gleaned from him, police conducted a drive in Gulbagh area of Shahjahanpur and arrested Sumon around 12:00am on Monday.
A total of nine helmets were recovered from his possession though he has no motorcycle of his own.
Asked about steps to ensure safety on the flyover, Abdul Baten said DMP set a CCTV camera at the end of the flyover. "Besides, the city corporation is responsible for supervising the flyover. So, it's up to them."
