A Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) employee was assaulted allegedly by plainclothes police in the city’s Jatrabari area early Friday for ignoring signal, says news agency UNB.
Bikash Chandra Das, 40, a cleaning inspector of the DSCC, was going to his work station at Mirhazirbagh by a motorcycle from his Doyaganj residence in the early hours of Friday.
When he reached Mirhazirtbagh Bazar around 4:00am, two policemen in plainclothes signaled him to stop, said Bikash’s brother-in-law Chandan Das.
However, Bikash did not stop suspecting the policemen as hijackers and tried to speed away, he said.
Sub-inspector Arshad Hossain Akash of Jatrabari police station chased the DSCC officer and caught him.
Later, the police officer beat Bikash mercilessly although he disclosed his identity, claimed Chandan.
Bikash was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 6am and later shifted to Lab Aid Hospital in the evening. He is now undergoing treatment at the Lab Aid ICU.
Contacted, deputy commissioner (Wari) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Syed Nurul Islam termed the incident ‘a misunderstanding’.
“As Bikash Chandra was trying to flee the scene ignoring the cop signal, SI Arshad Hossain Akash suspected him as a criminal,” said the DC, adding that a two-member probe body, headed by additional deputy commissioner Mainul Haque, has been formed to look into the incident. “We took the incident very seriously.”
The probe body has been asked to submit its report by three working days.
The incident took place in six days into the torture of Bangladesh Bank official Golam Rabbi allegedly by sub-inspector Masud Shikdar of Mohammadpur police station on 9 January.
The incident came to light after Rabbi filed an allegation for torturing him for five hours inside a police van in the capital’s Tajmahal Road on 9 January night.
Later, SI Masud was closed to the Police Lines on 11 January.
