Mymensingh police have finally recorded a murder case against religious affairs minister’s son Mohit Ur Rahman Shanto on Friday night over killing a Juba League leader Sazzad Alam Sheikh Azad.

Shanto, who is also the general secretary of Mymensingh city Awami League, issued directives to kill Azad with whom he had a power struggle over the Akua area in the city, according to Azad’s wife Dilruba Akhter.

Azad, a member of AL’s youth wing Juba League, was shot and hacked to death by some miscreants on 31 July.

Police refused to record the case when Azad’s wife went to file an official complaint, naming Shanto as the prime suspect on 2 August.

Azad’s wife later filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives on the matter and HC on Thursday ordered Mymensingh Kotwali police station to record the case.

“A case has been filed on 25 accused including Mymensingh city Juba League general secretary Russel Pathan. Nobody was arrested till Saturday evening though,” said officer in charge (OC) of the police station.

Refusing all allegations, Mohit, told Prothom Alo, “A vested quarter is trying to demean me. They have instigated Azad’s wife to file the case against me. It is a conspiracy.”

There was an open dispute between the two groups of Juba League to gain control over Akua in Mymensingh city.

Azad was killed following the rivalry, according to his family, locals and police.

Speaking at a press conference, Azad’s wife on 2 August claimed that Azad used to work with Shanto earlier. Shanto was angry when Azad left him and refused to follow his instructions.

A week before his murder, Shanto phoned Azad and threatened to kill him, Dilruba said.
