Stamford students' protest demands justice for Sharmin

The students of Stamford University have staged a demonstration demanding investigation into the death of the university’s English department student Rubaiyat Sharmin.

The students on Friday formed a human chain in the capital's Bailey Road and later brought out a procession which ended at Siddheshwari.

They were chanting slogans demanding justice for Sharmin’s death.

Police on Wednesday night recovered the body of Sharmin from Road of 68 Siddeshwari and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Rubaiyat Sharmin, 20, is the daughter of police inspector of Habiganj Md Rokonuddin.

The police said that Sharmin died probably after she was pushed off a multi-storey building. She could be raped before murder, the police suspect.

DMCH forensic medicine department chief Sohel Mahmud told Prothom Alo that the body bore multiple injury marks.

After further examinations, it could be known whether Sharmin was raped before murder, he added.

According to Sharmin's family, she was buried at her village in Mymensingh sadar on Friday.

Sharmin used to live with her family in the capital’s Shantibagh area. On Wednesday evening, she went outside her home after returning from tuition. Her family members searched her in various places as she did not come back home that night.

Later they identified her seeing picture at Ramna police station.

Police on Thursday morning filed a case with the Ramna police station accusing some unknown persons.

Investigation officer of the case inspector Jahirul Islam said no one had been arrested so far.

He hoped the police would solve the mystery surrounding the case soon.
