Arrest owner of BM container depot by 24 hrs: Chhatra Odhikar Parishad

Chhatra Odhikar Parishad has demanded arrest of Mujibur Rahman, one of the owners of BM container depot at Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram in connection with the fire and explosion which killed 41 people and injured scores.

The leaders of the organisation made the demand at a demonstration rally at the Razu Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus on Monday afternoon.

They said Mujibur Rahman is one of the owners of BM container depot at Sitakunda. He is a leader of Chattagram south unit Awami League.

Central leader of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, student wing of Gono Odhikar Parishad led by Reza Kibira and Nurul Haque, Bin Yamin Molla, demanded the arrest by 24 hours and punishment of those who are responsible for the fire at Sitakunda. This fire incident is not the first time in the country and such incidents are occurring one after another, he added

Yamin also said a section of unscrupulous businessmen illegally import and store chemicals and make brisk business of thousands of crore taka violating international and national rules and regulations. They are doing this under the shelter of the ruling party or they are their men.

The Chhatra Odhikar Parishad leader alleged the owner of BM container depot has provided wrong information after the incident. They said there is no chemical. Those who were in charge including Mujibur Rahman are responsible for the causalities.

Organisation's general secretary Ariful Islam said Awami League is creating opportunities for their 'collaborators' to do business illegally in a bid to hold on to power. People have no value today, he said adding the proper compensation has to be given to the injured and their families.

Ariful said laws and rules have to be implemented properly to ensure the use of chemical safely.

The organisation's university unit general secretary Akram Hossain said the violation of law has been the norm now for rulers. There is no rule of law. The safety of the nuclear power project has to be ensured so that another incident like Sitakunda does not take place in the future, Hossain added.
