BCL attacks JCD men as they attempt to meet VC
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Leaders and activists have allegedly carried out an attack on the Jatiyatabadi Chaatra Dal (JCD) men after the latter entered the Dhaka University (DU) campus to meet the vice chancellor.
The incident took place in front of the Nilkhet police outpost around 4:30 pm. Several JCD men sustained injuries in the attack and are now receiving treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The DU unit of JCD announced on Monday that they would meet the VC on Tuesday. Immediately after the announcement, the BCL said they will submit a memorandum to the VC regarding the prevailing problems and crisis of students. At the same time, they declared that they would resist the JCD men on the campus.
The attack on JCD men came in the development of the BCL declaration.
Witnesses said around 35 JCD men, led by DU president Khorshed Alam and general secretary Ariful Islam, entered the campus through the main entrance in Nilkhet area. At one stage, an activist of BCL’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit blocked the road and engaged in altercation and scuffle with the JCD men.
He also broke down the flour bouquet that the JCD men brought to present to the VC.
BCL’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit president Riyajul Islam appeared in the scene along with his followers equipped with sticks and stamps. They started beating up the JCD men mercilessly and chased them out of the campus.
Later, the BCL men of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall and Bijoy Ekattor Hall came to the spot and staged demonstrations there for around 15 minutes.
Ariful Islam, general secretary of DU JCD, termed the attack as despicable and said “Several of us were injured in the BCL attack. We strongly protest this incident and demand exemplary punishment to the attackers.”
