6 jail guards suspended over convict escape

A case was filed on Friday with the Konabari police station against convict Abu Bakr Siddiq who has escaped from the Kashimpur-2 jail.

Meanwhile, action has been taken against 12 prison guards of the Kashimpur jail. Six of them have been suspended and departmental action has been taken against the other six.

Kashimpur-2 jail senior superintendent Jahanara Begum said it was suspected that Abu Bakar Siddiq had scaled the 18 foot prison wall and escaped.

On Thursday after lockup, the convict Abu Bakar couldn’t be found anywhere inside the jail. Abu Bakar, son of Ali Gain, is from Abad Chandipur of Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira.

According to the jail authorities, Abu Bakar Siddiq had been sentenced to death and was brought to the Rajshahi central jail in 15 June 2011. Then on 27 July 2012 his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

On Thursday evening it was noticed that he was missing during the prisoner roll call. In 2015 too he had once gone missing but was later found hiding in a septic tank in the jail premises.

He was kept in chains for some days after that and he became slightly mentally deranged. The chains were then removed. He would often work alongside the other prison inmates, but on humanitarian grounds he was not forced to work.

On Thursday too he had been wandering around freely with the others. Then when he couldn’t be found in any of the 24 cells of the 6 buildings, a roll call of the prisoners was held and it was confirmed that he was missing.

Kashimpur-2 jail senior superintendent Jahanara Begum said it was suspected that Abu Bakar Siddiq had scaled the 18 foot prison wall and escaped. People had been sent to his home in Satkhira and the district police there had been informed about the matter.

The Konabari police station officer-in-charge (OC) Emdadul Hossain said that a case had been filed in connection to the prison escape.
