'Financial irregularities' by SHUJAN secy

Eminent citizens urge CEC to seek apology in case of failing to prove allegation

The chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda brought about allegation of irregularities of Tk 10 million against Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN) secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar.

Terming the allegation vengeful, some 37 eminent citizens in a press release on Tuesday urged the CEC to seek apology in case of failure to prove it by a week.

“The CEC came up with an allegation of the irregularities of Tk 10 million plus some baseless, indecent and vengeful remarks against the SHUJAN secretary in a speech delivered on 27 January at an occasion," the press release said.

Rejecting the allegation, Badiul Alam termed it fabricated and ill-motived, and asked the CEC to prove it.

According to the the release, the SHUJAN secretary played a strong role against the electoral frauds and irregularities in the regime of every government. The CEC has failed in preventing the rigging and irregularities in various local elections, including the 2018 national elections.

"We think that in order to cover up these misdeeds, he (CEC) is trying to create haze by making serious allegations against Badiul Alam Majumdar, SHUJAN and some prominent citizens of the country," it said.

"We believe that it is a vital responsibility of the state to bring a person like him to justice for the sake of restoring honesty and confidence in the electoral system of the country," the release added.

Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, M Hafizuddin Khan, MA Matin, Hamida Hossain, Ali Imam Majumder, Sultana Kamal, Rasheda K Chowdhury, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Ali Riaz, Debapriya Bhattacharya, among others, signed the statement.
