Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders, workers and supporters joined a ghaibana janaza (funeral rites in absentia) today, Wednesday, after the zuhr prayer at the Baitul Mukharram national mosque, for the Jamaat ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami who was hanged on charges of committing crimes against humanity.

After the janaza, the people flashed V signs while leaving the premises, calling out ‘Naraye takbir, Allahu Akbar’.
Nizami was executed Tuesday night, bringing the total of number of Jamaat leaders hanged to four.

Security forces were heavily deployed around Baitul Mukharram mosque during the janaza. Dhaka metropolitan police deputy commissioner (Motijheel), Anwar Hossain, told Prothom Alo, they had deployed the police to ensure law and order was not disrupted during the funeral.

Jamaat and Shibir leaders, workers and supporters began arriving at Baitul Mukharram from 12:00 noon. Ward no. 36 Jamaat president Mohammed Ibrahim said he had come to attend the ghaibana janaza which had been decided upon after the execution orders were carried out at the central jail on the previous night.

Jamaat announced the janaza programme through a press release, along with announcing a 24-hour countrywide general strike from Thursday morning.
