Jamaat calls hartal for tomorrow

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a countrywide daylong general strike for tomorrow, Monday, protesting at “deep conspiracy to revoke Islam as the state religion.”

The Islamist party called the shutdown in a press release issued on Sunday.

“Islam has remained as the state religion in many countries around the world. Bangladesh is a 90 per cent Muslim majority country and there has been demand from the people to annul Islam as the state religion,” argued Jamaat acting secretary general Md Shafiqur Rahman in the press release.

He called on the countrymen to observe the strike peacefully.

The press release said vehicles meant for emergency and basic services will remain out of the purview of the shutdown.
