BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury has resigned from the party, a decision which he termed as retirement from politics.
The bureaucrat turned politician tendered his resignation in a letter to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in London.
“I’ve decided to quit politics on health grounds, and there is no scope for me to hold any post in the BNP,” he told Prothom Alo on Thursday morning.
Shamsher Chowdhury said he submitted the resignation to acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, to forward to party chief Khaleda Zia.
Sources close to him said he had recently been planning to quit politics.
Shamsher Chowdhury, a freedom fighter, was foreign secretary when the BNP was in power.
