Centering the ‘March to Dhaka’ programme of the Students Against Discrimination, protesters had gathered at Kajla area of Jatrabari in the capital yesterday afternoon, Monday. They were chanting various slogans against the government.
At one point members of the law enforcement agencies started firing at them. Many were killed in this. Sources from Dhaka Medical College Hospital said that 30 people who were shot dead had been brought to the hospital from Jatrabari area.
At the last minute of the one-point announced by Students Against Discrimination being met, at least 109 people were killed in clashes at different parts of the country including capital Dhaka. There is an upazila parishad chairman and two union parishad chairmen among the deceased.
Earlier, Prothom Alo published news of 98 deaths till Sunday midnight. There came news of 16 more deaths at the dead of the night. With that, the total tally of death on Sunday stood at 114. Including all, the total death toll in 21 days starting from 16 July to 5 August stands at 440.
As many as 37 bodies arrived at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm yesterday, Monday.
According to sources of the hospital, bodies of Rasel, 25, Abdur Rahman, 22, Saiful Islam, 22, Abu Ishak, 24, Azmat, 40, Yasin Sarker, 24, Shahin, 28, Sohel, 22, Hamidur Rahman, 22, Shaon, 13, Riton, 32, Abdul Hannan, 50, Monowar, 50, Abdun Noor, 24, along with 16 other unidentified bodies had arrived from Jatrabari.
Bodies of Rakib, 22, and Manik Mia, 26, have been brought from Chankharpool. The body of Raihan, 22, arrived from Badda and the body of another man named Rony, 28, came to this hospital from Bangshal area.
Apart from this, bullet-ridden bodies of three unidentified people have also been brought to the hospital. But, it was not know where they had been shot.
According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital sources, 500 people with various injuries including bullet wounds were brought to the hospital. Of them, 70 have been admitted to the hospital.
An eye-witness of the incident at Jatrabari, Md Shoaib told Prothom Alo from Dhaka Medical College Hospital, “After saying the Zuhr prayers, we were standing in front of the Jatrabari police station. The police suddenly opened fire on us.
"I saw at least 10 to 15 people lying dead before the police station. When the shooting stopped later, we carried out the bodies lying in front of the police station," he added. Witnesses said that the protesters attacked the police station in the afternoon.
There has been news of ten people being shot dead by police centering the siege of a police station in capital’s Uttara. This incident of clash between the police and the protesters continued from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday.
Director of Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital, Major (retd) Hafiz told Prothom Alo that two people with bullet wounds have been brought dead to their hospital. And, Crescent Hospital director Major (retd) Nazmul said that eight people have died with bullet wounds in their hospital.
As many as 18 people have been killed in separate incident of clash between the police and the protesters in Dhaka’s Savar.
Caretaker of private Enam Medical College Hospital Md Yusuf said that five people were brought dead to the hospital and three others died while undergoing treatment.
The deceased people are identified as Ramjan, Mojahid, Nafisa, Tauhidur Rahman, Rasel, Rafiq, Nisan and Shobdo. Their detail identities couldn’t be found though.
Apart from that a person named Shrabon Gazi, 21, died in an incident of clash in Savar. Members of his family said that he was shot dead. Meanwhile, three people have been killed in clashes at Bipail area of Ashulia.
Manger of Ashulia Women and Children Hospital Harun-Or-Rashid told Prothom Alo that there people had been brought dead to the hospital. They had been shot. One of the deceased has been identified as Zahidul Islam, 25, he said.
Meanwhile, coordinator of the Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital in Savar Golam Rahman Shahjahan said that six people have died with bullet wounds in their hospital.
After Sheikh Hisina left the country, agitated public set fire on five-star Zabeer International Hotel owned by Jashore district Awami League general secretary Shahin Chakladar. At least 13 people were burnt dead in this. Their names couldn’t be confirmed immediately.
Caretaker of Jashore General Hospital Harun-Or-Rashid has confirmed the death of at least 13 people in the fire.
Six people have been killed in clashes with police in Kushtia city. These people died when the police opened fire centering an attack on Kushtia model police station and the office of police superintendent on Monday afternoon.
The list of deceased includes Yusuf Ali, 70, and Abdullah, 13, from Thanapara area of the city, Babu, 40, and Ashraf, 42, from Haripur area in the Sadar upazila. The others could not be identified.

Baniyachang Upazila health officer Shamima Akhter has confirmed the death of these six people.

A man named Rafiqul Islam alias Chanchal, 21, has been shot dead by river police in Shibganj upazila of Manikganj. Earlier, agitated people set Shibaloy river police station and Shibaloy police station on fire.
The incident took place in the afternoon on Monday. Deceased Rafiqul was a student of class 12 at Mahadevpur Degree College. Additional superintendent of police (admin and finance) Sujan Sarker has confirmed the news.
Five people have been killed in a clash between protesters and BGB personnel in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur around 2:00 pm on Monday. More than 50 people shot at the time.
Earlier around 11:00 am in the morning, two buses carrying BGB personnel were attacked and set on fire on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Mulaid village of Sreepur. The bodies of the five people killed in the clash were taken to Al-Hera Hospital at Maona Chowrasta in Sreepur.
According to sources of the hospital, names of three deceased people have been found. They names are Md Kawsar, 22, Md Shariful Islam, 20, and Sifat Ullah, 23. Kawsar and Sifat were students while Sharif is a garments factory worker.
At least four people have been killed in a fire set by miscreants at the house of former Jubo League convener in Chuadanga, Arefin Alam Ronju in Cinema Hallpara area of the city. All four of them are male. They couldn’t be identified as their bodies were deformed in the fire.
Chuadanga Fire Service and Civil Defence station officer Jahangir Alam told Prothom Alo that four bodies were found on the third floor after the fire had been brought under control. The bodies couldn’t be identified since they were charred in the fire. When tried to contact Arefin Alam by calling on his cellphone to get his comment on this, it was found switched off.
Agitated people attacked and set fire on the house of Jhemnaidah Sadar’s no. 9 Porahati UP chairman, Shahidul Islam Hiron that is located in Adarshapara area of Jhenaidah city on Monday afternoon. He died in the fire. At the same time, the chairman’s driver Akhter Hossain died in mob lynching.
Protesters attacked Shafipur Ansar-VDP academy in Gazipur’s Kaliakair on Monday. The Ansar members fired shots at the time killing at least two people.
One of the deceased has been identified as Elim Hossain, 30, of Rakhaliachala area in the upzaila. The other deceased youth could not be identified.
Physician at Shafipur Modern Hospital, Saddam Hossain said that two people had been brought dead to the hospital.
Chairman of Lakshmipur Model Union Parishad (UP) in Chandpur Sadar upazila, Selim Khan and his son film actor Shanto Khan have been beaten to death. According to local sources, they face public rage coming to Farakkabad Bazar area in Balia Union while they were fleeing the area on Monday.
Though they got out of there by firing shots from pistol, they died in mob lynching when they reached neighbouring Bagara Bazar area. Shanto’s father-in-law MI Mamin confirmed the news of Selim Khan and his son’s death.
Meanwhile, sub-inspector of Kochua police station Mamunur Rashid was also beaten to death on Monday. Officer-in-charge of the detective branch of police in Chandpur, Monirul Islam has confirmed the news.
A man named Masud Byapari, 35, in a clash of two groups in Hariasa area of Zajira upazila in Shariatpur on Monday afternoon. Zajira upazila health and family planning officer Mahmudul Hasan told Prothom Alo that the man died being shot in the chest.
In Koyra of Khulna, upazila parishad chairman and upazila Awami League president GM Mohsin Reza was beaten to death on Monday by mob that broke into his house. Mohsin Reza’s cousin Saiful Islam confirmed the news.
