
Noted singer Farida Yasmin passed away at BIRDEM Hospital in the city on Saturday.
The prominent playback singer of the 1960s breathed her last at 6:30pm, said Masuma Khatun, daughter-in-law of Farida Yasmin.
“She (Farida) had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for kidney related complications since 21 July. A few days after her admission into the hospital, she went to a coma following a cardiac arrest,” said Masuma.
The singer’s mortal remains will be brought to her Segunbagicha residence at 10:00am on Sunday, she added.
Fairda, also the elder sister of two popular singers Sabina Yasmin and Nilufar Yasmin, is survived by husband Kazi Anwar Hossain and two sons and a daughter.
Born on 3 February in 1940, Farida emerged as a singer in 1957 through radio. In the 60s, she earned huge popularity as a playback singer.
She gave the nation memorable tracks like ‘Phooler hawa laglo’, ‘Tumi jiboney moroney amaye apon korechho’, and ‘Saiyan bedardi mora dard na jaane re’, an Urdu song from the superhit film ‘Chanda’. The last one was hugely popular in both the then East and West Pakistan.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock at her demise.
In a condolence message, she said the death of Farida Yasmin caused an irreparable loss to the country’s musical arena.
