Ten years have passed, but the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has not kept its commitment. It has been more focussed on acquittal than control of corruption. Just in the first eight months of this year alone, ACC has acquitted 1598 persons of corruption charges. Of these, 870 didn't even face any cases. Yet the SCC chairman claims, "It would be unjust to call us the Acquittal of Corruption Commission." But over the 10 years of ACC, they have proved time and again how unjust it is to let the corrupt influential persons off the hook.
At ACC's founding anniversary, the ACC chairman said, "ACC has become stronger than ever before." And yet 10 persons including former communications minister Syed Abul Hossain and former state minister for foreign affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury Syed were acquitted of charges regarding the Padma Bridge corruption case. Then again, former health minister AFM Ruhul Huq, former social welfare minister Mozammel Hossain, Aslamul Huq MP and former chairman of BTMC Abul Kalam, were all acquitted of charges regarding illegal wealth.
The sensation railway scandal involving Suranjit Sengupta wasn't even investigated. His son was exempted from all corruption charges. Others who have been blatantly excused from corruption charges by ACC are deputy leader of the house Sajeda Chowdhury, relief and disaster management minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, health minister Mohammed Nasim and former health adviser to the prime minister Syed Modasser Ali.
Investigations into corruption by former Petrobangla chairman Hossain Mansur halted midway. All those who are being acquitted are persons of the government camp.
ACC is only very conscious of corruption when it comes to proving charges against persons of the opposition camp. This proves that ACC is a politically biased institution. If political identity is the main criteria for ACC's investigations, then there is no rule of law involved. The persons who accept corruption and those who commit corruption may not be equally guilty, but ACC cannot escape the responsibility of acquitting the corrupt.
