Brac University tops private university ranking
Brac University tops the private university ranking in Bangladesh, followed by North South University, with Independent University coming up third. Dhaka Tribune and Bangla Tribune jointly published the results of the survey conducted by Org-quest Research Limited. This is the first survey of this kind.
The survey was based on certain factors, including the number of teachers, research work, campuses, education quality, performance of the students and teachers, library condition, employment opportunities for the students and the perception about the university and their students.
Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, an advisor to the study, told Prothom Alo that the survey was based on factual and perceptual data. ‘The result might not be a hundred percent accurate, but we tried our best,’ he said.
Syed Manzoorul Islam thinks ranking the private universities will generate a competitive drive among them. Universities will feel the pressure to do better in the future and this is a positive factor.
According to the survey, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology is in fourth in ranking, and American International University Bangladesh in fifth position. University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, East West University, University of Asia Pacific, United International University, and Daffodil International University consecutively round off the top 10.
The organisers of the survey said, the perceptual score contributed 60 percent to the survey’s total score and factual score 40 percent. The factual score was collected from the University Grants Commission (UGC) data of 2014. Perceptual scores were collected by conducting the survey on academics including deans, heads of the departments, professors and registrars and the work performance of the officials of different human resource department. North South University topped in this segment.
Initially, 32 out of 83 private universities were selected for the survey. Among them list of 20 universities was published on Friday.
The study was carried out under the supervision of an advisory committee that comprised Syed Manzoorul Islam, professor the University of Dhaka, Monzurul Haque, chairman and managing director of Org-quest, Zulfiqer Russell, editor of the Bangla Tribune, Sharifuzzaman Pintu, news editor of Prothom Alo, and Syeed Ahmed, CEO of the Institute of Informatics and Development.
