DU teacher relieved of duties over 98pc plagiarism in PhD thesis

Associate professor of pharmaceutical technology department at Dhaka University AK Lutful Kabir has been relieved of his academic and administrative duties on allegation of acquiring his doctorate degree from the same department in 2015 submitting an almost 98 cent per cent plagiarised PhD dissertation.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university, held on Tuesday with DU vice chancellor professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

A probe body has also been formed to investigate into the matter.

A media release was issued from the public relations sections of the university in this regard.

AK Lutful Kabir was also appointed as an assistant proctor of the university.

The syndicate members said they have taken the decision considering the Prothom Alo's 21 January news titled '98pc plagiarism found in DU teacher’s PhD dissertation'.

UNB adds: the Dhaka University authorities have expelled 67 of its students on various charges. Of them, 63 students face the actions for getting enrolled at the university through fraudulent means from 2012-13 to 2017-18 academic sessions while four others for drug abuse and possessing illegal arms, said DU proctor professor AKM Golam Rabbani.

The university also suspended 13 other students for their involvement in mugging and two others for beating up journalists. The suspended students were also served show-cause notices to explain why they should not be expelled.

“University authorities won’t accept any fraudulence in admission tests. It’s a matter of university’s reputation. We’ll take the similar step if anyone tries to adopt unfair means in the entry tests, ” said the proctor.
