Nayan Bond killed in police ‘gunfight’

The main accused of Rifat Sharif murder Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond was killed in what police called a gunfight with them in Barguna's Burirchar early Tuesday.

Officer-in-charge of Barguna police station has confirmed this to Prothom Alo.

Police officials claimed that a team of police, tipped off, went to the village to arrest Nayan when he and his cohorts opened fire at them in front of Master Bari area of east Burirchar village, forcing the policemen to retaliate and this triggered a gunfight.

According to the police version, Nayan was killed on the spot and four policemen including Barguna additional superintendent of police Shahjahan Mia were injured in the attack.   

"The condition of the two injured is serious. They are undergoing treatment at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal," the OC said.

He also said that police recovered a pistol, a bullet, three machetes and shells of three bullets from the spot.

Rifat Sharif was brutally hacked to death in broad day light around 10:00am in the morning last Wednesday in front of his wife. The deceased’s wife tried her best to ward off the miscreants but to no avail.

Rifat succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

A video clip of the incident stirred the nation after it got viral on social media.

Rifat’s father filed a case with Barguna Sadar police station accusing 12 people including Nayan Bond, Rifat and Rishan Farazi and four to five other unnamed suspects.

Police arrested nine people till Monday in the case. Among them, Chandan, 21, Md Hassan, 19, Oliullah, 22 , Tiktok Hridoy, 21 are charged accused. The other five were arrested as suspects. They are Nazmul Islam, 18, Sagar, 19, Tanvir, 22, Kamrul Hasan alias Saimun, 21. The police, however, did not reveal the name of another suspect.

Another two major accused, Rifat Farazi and his younger brother Rishan Farazi, are still on the run.
