A low-pressure system has formed over the Bay of Bengal, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to ask four seaports to hoist Local Cautionary Signal no. 3. The warning was issued late on Sunday night.
However, meteorologists said the likelihood of the system developing into a depression remains low. It is also unlikely to bring heavy rainfall.
Rainfall may increase today, Monday, particularly in coastal areas, while parts of the capital may receive some rain between the afternoon and evening.
Two low-pressure systems have already formed this month, although neither brought significant rainfall. Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the latest system is also unlikely to intensify into a depression.
Speaking to Prothom Alo this morning, he said, “A low-pressure system is currently situated over the north-western Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. Under its influence, coastal areas may experience intermittent rainfall. Rainfall may increase somewhat, which could bring temporary relief.”
The weather bulletin advised fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay to remain close to the coast and navigate cautiously until further notice.
According to a warning issued by the Storm Warning Centre yesterday, Sunday, strong winds may sweep across the seaports, the North Bay and Bangladesh’s coastal areas under the influence of the low-pressure system.
Consequently, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to hoist Local Cautionary Signal no. 3.
Meteorologist Omar Faruk said, “This low-pressure system is unlikely to have any significant impact on Bangladesh. Although scattered rainfall may occur this week, prolonged rainfall is unlikely. However, rainfall may increase next Sunday. Another low-pressure system may also form two days later.”
He added, “The capital may receive rain in the afternoon or evening today. However, the rainfall is unlikely to be heavy.”
The weather bulletin also said that temperatures may fall slightly today, Monday compared with yesterday, Sunday.
