Bangladesh beat India in nail-biter in Asia Cup

Bangladesh will take on India in the final match of the Super 4 stage in a match where there is nothing at stake other than pride for the Tigers.

Bangladesh are out of contention for the final after defeats to Sri Lanka and Pakistan and India are already through to the final.

Still, after demoralising defeats in their last two matches, Bangladesh will be hoping to end the match with a victory to take away something from an otherwise unsuccessful Asia Cup campaign.

India lost the toss and sent Bangladesh to bat first.

Both teams have made five changes.

Bangladesh's Under-19 World Cup winning pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib will be making his ODI debut against India.

Anamul Haque will also get a chance to stake his claim for a spot in the World Cup squad after being out of the team for a long time.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim had gotten out for a golden duck in his ODI debut earlier in the Asia Cup.

After sitting out three matches, the left-hander returned to the XI against India and opened his account in international cricket with a boundary off Mohammad Shami.

Shami bowled at his pads in the first ball of the match and Tanzid easily dispatched it for four runs.

Litton Das is batting at the other end for Bangladesh. After the first over, Bangladesh are 5-0.

Tanzid hit a couple of boundaries in the second over with delightful cover drives as Bangladesh moved on to 13-0 after two overs.

Litton's lean period with the bat continues as the batter got out for a duck against India, losing his middle stump to Shami.

The ball pitched in the fourth stump line and sneaked in between the gap between his bat and pad to hit the top of middle stump.

Bangladesh 13-1 after 2.1 overs. Anamul Haque replaces him in the middle.

The troubles worsen for Bangladesh as Tanzid plays on a short delivery from Shardul Thakur to throw a good start.

Tanzid departs for 13 off 12 balls as Bangladesh are reduced to 15-2 after 3.1 overs.

Anamul's struggle in the middle ends as the batter departs for four off 11 balls.

Anamul got off the mark with an aerial shot which went for four. But just one ball later, he attempted another pull shot against Shardul, but top-edged the ball, which went straight into the hands of keeper KL Rahul.

Bangladesh are 28-3 after 5.4 overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz replaces Anamul in the middle.

Bangladesh had brought three opening options with them in the Asia Cup, Mohammad Naim, Tanzid and Anamul.

Bangladesh had tried out Naim in the first four matches of the Asia Cup. He was dropped against India in favour of Tanzid. Anamul also got a opportunity in the top-order against India.

But all three openers have failed to make use of their opportunities, exposing the frailty of the Bangladesh top-order.

Litton Das's prolonged poor form is also another worrying sign for Bangladesh heading into the World Cup in India in October.

Miraz got dropped twice in the same over as Bangladesh reached 44-3 after the 1st powerplay.

Miraz first gave a simple catch to Tilak Varma at on side, which the debutant failed to hold on to it.

He then lashed at a widish delivery from Shardul in the final ball of the over, which took an outside edge and went to the slip cordon.

Surya Kumar Yadav got leapt and got both hands to the ball but couldn't hold on to it.

Miraz is on seven off 17 balls with skipper Shakib batting on 14 off 21 balls at the other end.

Bangladesh bring up 50 in the 12th over as Shakib and Miraz battle to salvage the innings after a disastrous start.

Shakib is batting on 18 while Miraz is one seven.

Miraz couldn't cash in on his two lives as the right-hander gave a catch to slip off Axar Patel as Bangladesh have lost four wickets for just 59 runs at the end of 14 overs.

After 13 overs of fast bowling, Axar was the first spinner to join the attack. the off-spinner struck in the last ball of his first over, dismissing Miraz for 13 off 28 balls.

The situation keeps worsening for Bangladesh.

Debutant Tilak almost claimedg his first wicket in ODI cricket as he induced an outside edge against Shakib, but wicketkeeper KL Rahul failed to hold on to the chance.

Tilak, the part-time off-spinner, is now operating alongside left-arm spinner Axar, who has beaten the outside edge of Towhid's bat multiple times already.

After the pacers, the Indian spinners are now testing Bangladesh.

After 19 overs, Bangladesh are 72-4.

A slight misfielding from Surya at the boundary gave Bangladesh their first boundary in after 49 balls.

In the penultimate ball of the 20th over, Shakib hit a sweep shot against Axar. Surya, stationed at the boundary, put in a dive to save the four. He got there in time, but couldn't completely halt the momentum of the ball as it rolled over to the ropes.

After 20 overs, Bangladesh are 78-4. Shakib is on 34 while Towhid is batting on five.

Towhid showed first signs of aggression in the 23rd over, coming down the track against part-timer Tilak and hitting him for two sixes, one over the bowler's head and the other one on the on-side.

With the sixes, Towhid has moved on to 21 while Shakib is on 37.

Bangladesh are 97-4 after 23 overs.

Towhid got a little rub of the green in the 24th over as he edged a ball from Axar, which went between the keeper and Rohit Sharma at first slip and went for a boundary.

The fortuitous four runs also brought up Bangladesh's 100.

After 24 overs, Bangladesh are 101-4.

Shakib hit two commanding sixes off Axar in the 26th over, bringing up his 55th half-century in ODIs and taking the Tigers to 124-4.

Other than the two sixes, Shakib also hit five fours in his innings and had reached 60 off 67 balls, in what has been a brilliant counterattacking innings under difficult circumstances.

The partnership with Towhid has extended to 65 runs after 24 overs.

Shakib and Towhid are now taking on the Indian bowlers as they have completed a 100-run partnership for the fifth wicket off 111 balls, as Bangladesh have reached 160-4 after 33 overs.

After bringing up the 50-run stand off 67 balls, it took Shakib and Towhid 44 balls to add another 50 runs to partnership.

Shakib is 20 runs away of what would be his 10th ODI century while Towhid is batting on 40.

Shakib's brilliant counterattacking innings came to an end right after the drinks break as he played on a ball from Shardul to his stumps to depart for a well made 80 off 85 balls.

Bangladesh are now on 160-5 after 33.1 overs. Shamim Hossain joins Towhid at the middle.

Shamim Hossain completely misread Jadeja's delivery and got trapped LBW by the left-arm spinner for one run.

Bangladesh are now six down for 161 in 34.1 overs.

Towhid guided Axar's delivery through the third-man area for a boundary to bring up his half-century off 77 balls in the 40th over.

With 10 overs to go, Bangladesh are 188-6 with Towhid batting on 53 off 78 balls and Nasum unbeaten on 14 off 19 balls.

Nasum Ahmed had hit Jadeja for a six over mid-wicket in the 39th over. He again took on the left-arm spinner in the 41st over, hitting him for a four through the same region.

But Nasum then went on to play four consecutive dot deliveries as the 41st over yielded Bangladesh five runs.

Bangladesh are 193-6.

Towhid's fight came to an end in the 42nd over as the batter top-edged a pull shot against Shami and got caught by Tilak Varma.

In his 81-ball stay, Towhid hit five fours and two sixes. He struggled to rotate the strike and that impacted his strike rate.

With Towhid gone, Bangladesh are three wickets away from getting bundled out for the fourth time in five matches in the Asia Cup.

Mahedi Hasan replaced Towhid and got off the mark with a boundary through the off-side.

With eight overs to go, Bangladesh are 197-7.

Nasum and Mahedi hit a boundary each against Jadeja in an over that yielded 13 runs as Bangladesh brought up 200 in the 43rd over.

Bangladesh have now moved on to 210-7 with seven overs to go.

Nasum moved on to 31 off 32 balls in what is turning out to be an effective cameo innings for Bangladesh, as the score has reached 217-7 after 46 overs.

Nasum lofted Shami over mid-on to hit his fourth four in the innings to start the 44th over. Three runs came off the rest of the over.

Mahedi, on the other end, is batting on 11 off eight balls.

Nasum is playing a really effective cameo for Bangladesh down the order as the left-hander has moved on to 40 off just 39 balls with Mahedi batting on 17 off 13 balls at the other end.

Nasum top-edged the ball against Shami, which went for a boundary behind the keeper's head in an over that yielded nine runs.

With four overs to go, Bangladesh are 233-7.

Nasum hit his sixth four of the innings as Bangladesh got five runs from the 47th over and reached 237-7.

Nasum is now six runs away from what would be an amazing half-century and the partnership between him and Mahedi has reached 44 off 34 balls.

Nasum's entertaining cameo ended on 44 off 45 balls as he played on a delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna in the 48th over, with Bangladesh on 238-7.

Nasum hit six fours and a six in his career best ODI knock which has taken Bangladesh to a somewhat respectable total.

His partner Mahedi is still at the middle, batting on 19 off 15 balls as Bangladesh are 238-8 after 47.2 overs.

Debutant Tanzim Hasan Sakib replaces Nasum.

Debutant Tanzim hit a six straight down the ground against Shardul as Bangladesh bring up 250 runs with one over to go.

11 runs came off the penultimate over from Shardul. Tanzim will be on strike in the final over while Mahedi, who is on 24 off 20 balls, will be at the other end.

Mahedi Hasan finished the Bangladesh innings with a boundary as Bangladesh posted a fighting 265-8 against India.

Mahedi finished on an unbeaten 29 off 23 balls, debutant Tanzim also chipped in with 14 not out off eight balls after a superb cameo from Nasum of 44 off 45 balls as Bangladesh managed to score 77 runs of the final 10 overs despite having just four wickets in hand.

Nasum and Mahedi got together after Bangladesh lost a well-set Towhid in the 42nd over.

The duo saved Bangladesh from an early capitulation, kept taking calculated risk against the Indian bowlers and had luck favour them on a few occasions to add 45 runs for the eighth wicket, a partnership that took Bangladesh to a respectable total.

Before Nasum and Mahedi's fight back, it was the pair of Shakib and Towhid that rescued Bangladesh after they had lost four wicket for just 59 runs.

Shakib was the aggressor of the two, hitting 80 off 85 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.

Towhid at times struggled to rotate the strike but still did well to hang on and score 54 off 81 balls.

Indian pacer Shardul was a little on the expensive side, conceding 65 of his 10 overs but was also their most successful bowler with three wickets.

Shami was the most consistent bowler on display, finishing with 2-32 in eight overs.

Bangladesh have rested Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam for the match. The experienced Mustafizur Rahman and debutant Tanzim are Bangladesh's only two pacers against India.

Bangladesh have gone with a spin-heavy attack, with Shakib, Miraz, Nasum and Mahedi in the XI.

The Indian spinner did extract some turn in the first innings. Hence, Bangladesh will also be hoping that their spinners will come good against India, who are without the likes of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya in the match.

Tanzim started his ODI career with a wide down the leg side. He followed it up with a decent ball before bowling another wide ball, this time in the off-side.

But the pacer then claimed his first international cricket, by dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma for a duck. Rohit mistimed a shot straight to Anamul Haque in the off side.

Tanzim bowled another wide ball as no runs came off the bat in the opening over.

India are 3-1, chasing 266.

Mustafizur Rahman tested Shubhman Gill and Tilak Varma in his first over. Still it cost Bangladesh 10 runs as Gill hit the fifth ball for a gorgeous straight drive which reached the fence and edged the next ball wide of slip for a boundary.

India are 13-1 after two overs.

Debutant Tanzim dismissed the Indian debutant Tilak for five off nine balls as India are 17-2 after 2.4 overs.

Tilak tried to leave the ball but it came back in just enough to hit the off stump.

KL Rahul has replaced him at the middle. India are 17-2 after three overs.

In the battle of the debutants between Tanzim and Tilak, the Bangladesh pacer came out on top. But this is not the first time they have faced off.

Both were part of the 2020 Under-19 World Cup final. And in that match too, Sakib had dismissed Tilak.

Shakib introduced spin in the sixth over of the innings, replacing Mustafiz, who has been a bit on the expensive side, with Nasum.

Nasum found some turn in his first ball conceded just one run in the over.

After six overs, India are 24-2.

Tanzim nearly got his third strike in the match in the seventh over.

Tanzim hit KL Rahul on the pads and the fielders went up for an appeal. The on field umpire denied the appeal Shakib, after a lengthy deliberation, reviewed the decision.

The replay showed that the ball hit him in line with the stumps but the ball bounced just a little too much and would've gone over the off stump.

After seven overs, India are 27-2.

Gill and Rahul are batting on 19 and 11 respectively as India reached 42-2 after 10 overs.

Shakib bowled the last over of the 1st powerplay, and conceded four runs off it.

Tanzim has been the most impressive bowler for Bangladesh in the 1st powerplay, as he claimed two wickets from his five overs and conceded just 11 runs.

Mahedi broke the Gill-Rahul partnership by dismissing the latter for 19 off 39 balls.

Rahul took a couple of steps down the ground and tried to maneuver the ball through the leg side. But he ended up hitting the ball straight to Shamim, who gleefully took the easy catch.

The wicket came in the back of a couple of tight overs from Mahedi, where he conceded just three runs.

The wicket broke a 57-run partnership. New batter Ishan Kishan played five dot deliveries as the over ended as a wicket maiden.

After 18 overs, India are 74.3.

Gill charged down the wicket against Mahedi and hit him for a huge six in the final ball of the 20th over to reach his half-century off 61 balls.

Other than the six, Gill has also hit six fours in his innings and at the moment looking like the biggest threat for Bangladesh.

Indian reached 89-3 after 20 overs.

Shakib had conceded 12 runs of two overs in his first spell in the match.

The left-arm spinner began his second spell in the 23rd over with a maiden over.

After 23 overs, India are 94-3 with Gill and Kishan batting on 57 and five respectively.

Indida lose their fourth wicket as Miraz trapped Kishan LBW for five off 15 balls as India are 94-4 after 23.3 overs.

Kishan tried to hit a switch hit against the off-spinner but couldn't make any connection with the ball.

The ball hit hi knee roll and was promptly given out LBW by the umpire. Kishan reluctantly reviewed the decision and the third umpire upheld the original decision.

New batter Surya Kumar Yadav got off the mark with a four that same over as India reached 98-4 after 24 overs.

Shakib reviewed a not out LBW decision against Surya Kumar Yadav in the 25th over, which the third umpire turned down and now Bangladesh are all out of reviews.

Earlier, Bangladesh had lost another review in the 1st powerplay, when they had reviewed an LBW decision of the bowling of Tanzim.

Mahedi's second spell started poorly as he conceded nine runs, which took India's score to 126-4 after 30 overs.

Gill, who is batting on 70 off 90 balls, holds the key in the chase for India, while Surya at the other end is batting on 17 off 25 balls.

For the first time in his innings, Gill played a false stroke and top-edged the ball but fortunately for India and unfortunately for Bangladesh, the ball was just out of the reach of Shakib.

Gill came down the track against Nasum and tried to lift the ball over the in field but top edged the ball. Shakib ran back from inside the circle to catch the ball and but the ball was just beyond his outstretched hand.

India reached 137-4 after 32 overs with Gill on 73 and Surya on 25.

Surya had been trying to sweep Shakib for a while but was struggling to execute the shot properly.

His penchant for sweep shot brought his demise. He attempted another sweep in the fourth ball of the 33rd over, missed the ball completely and the ball shattered his stumps.

India are now five down for 139. Gill, not out on 74, holds the key to the chase.

Gill struck two sixes off Miraz in the 36th over to release the pressure that had been built up as India reached 163-5 after 36 overs.

Gill also survived a close run out chance in the over, where a direct hit would've seen the back of him.

Gill has moved on to 93 off 111 balls as India need 103 runs to win from 84 balls.

Mustafiz strikes in the first over of his second spell, shattering the stumps of Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja tried a cross batted slog against Mustafiz but missed the ball completely and it went onto hit his middle stump.

Jadeja departs for seven off 12 balls and his departure brings Axar Patel to the middle.

After 38 overs, India are 171-6. Gill is unbeaten on 98.

Gill maneuvered the ball on the on side and ran a couple of runs to reach his fifth ODI ton off 117 balls in the 39th over, bowled by Tanzim.

Gill then hit a couple of more boundaries in the over, which cost Bangladesh 12 runs.

India are now 183-6 and require 83 to win off 66 balls.

The 40th over from Mustafiz costed Bangladesh five runs as India now require 78 off 60 balls to win.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, need four wickets to thwart the Indians.

Shakib finished his quota of overs, finished with figures of 43-1.

The left-arm spinner nearly got another wicket in the over when Axar mistimed a slog against him. But unfortunately for Shakib, the fell between Towhid and Anamul.

India now need 71 off 54 balls. Gill is unbeaten on 112 and Axar is batting on eight off 11 balls.

Mahedi bowled a good tight over for Bangladesh which cost only three runs.

India are now 198-6, 68 runs away from their target with 48 balls to go.

nasum backed up Mahedi's tight over with another good over for Bangladesh, conceding only four in the 43rd over.

India now need 65 runs off 42 balls.

Gill's brilliant innings finally came to an end in the 44th over as the batter got caught at long on while attempting to hit his sixth six in the innings.

Gill had hit Mahedi for a huge six in the third ball of the 44th over.

Gill attempted to hit another six, this time down the ground. But Mahedi had pitched the ball further away from the batter, hence Gill couldn't get the requisite timing to clear the ropes.

Towhid came running in and took a crucial catch, which has put Bangladesh on top in the nail-biting contest.

Gill's marvelous innings stops at 121 off 133 balls.

Gill has been replaced by Shardul Thakur at the middle.

After the over, India are 210-7. They need 56 off 36 balls to win while Bangladesh need three wickets.

Nasum got hit for a four and a six by Axar in the 45th over, which cost Bangladesh 12 runs.

Nasum nearly had the last laugh, when he created a stumping opportunity against Axar from a wide ball. But Litton couldn't collect the ball cleanly.

India now need 44 off 30 balls to win.

The match in Colombo is going down to the wire as India need 38 off 24 balls to win after the 46th over from Mahedi went for six runs.

Axar now holds the key to the chase and is batting on 23 off 26 balls. His partner Shardul is batting on five off six balls.

Mustafiz conceded seven runs in the 47th over, which leaves India 31 runs to get off 18 balls.

Axar is batting on 26 off 28 balls while Shardul is batting on nine off 10 balls.

Shakib took the brave decision to continue with off-spinner Mahedi in the 48th over while pacer Tanzim had overs left in the tank.

The gamble didn't pay off as Axar hit a four and a six of the last two balls to take 14 runs of the over.

India now need just 17 off 12 balls.

Axar is batting on 38 off 32 balls and is taking the match away from Bangladesh.

Mustafiz bowled a full ball first up in the penultimate over, which Shardul hit straight at Miraz.

Shardul departs for 11 off 13 balls. Importantly for Bangladesh, Mohammad Shami will now take strike, not the set batter Axar.

Axar hit a four off the third ball of the 49th over to bring down the equation to 12 off nine balls.

But then he mistimed a lofted shot and got caught for 42, bringing Bangladesh back into the match.

New batter Prasidh Krishna played and missed the remaining two balls. India now need 12 off the final over.

Mohammad Shami got run out in the penultimate ball of the innings as Bangladesh won their final match in the 2023 Asia Cup by six runs against India.

Tanzim hit Shami in the helmet with a slower bouncer first up. He followed it up with a couple of dot balls from slower deliveries.

Shami the hit a four of the fourth delivery, bringing the equation to eight off two balls.

Shami then hit the ball to the leg side and tried to take a couple of runs. But before he could finish the second run, Litton collected the ball and dislodged the stumps.

Bangladesh's lacklustre campaign in the Asia Cup ended with a consolation win over India in Colombo.

Both teams tested their bench strength in the match, making five changes apiece.

Sent to bat, Bangladesh posted a fighting 265-8 mainly thanks to a brilliant 80 from Shakib, a hard fought 54 from Towhid and a couple of cameo down the order from Nasum (44) and Mahedi (29).

Debutant Tanzim then came up with the goods in the 1st powerplay, striking twice, the spinner chocked the Indian innings through the middle overs and some brave captaincy choices from Shakib paid dividends.

Shubhman Gill almost spoiled Bangladesh chances with a brilliant century, his fifth in ODIs. After his departure, it was Axar who threatened to snatch away the victory. But in the end, it was Bangladesh who came out on top.

Pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib had a debut to remember.

Batting down the order, he hit a six and a four to score a handy 14. And with the ball, he was Bangladesh's stand out bowler in the match.

Almost 11 years after beating India in Dhaka, Bangladesh have managed to defeat India in the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh came close to beating India on multiple occasions but in those matches the Indian team came out on top.

Shakib was under pressure after the team's poor performance in the Asia Cup. But the all-rounder once again delivered after getting backed into a corner.

Shakib helped repair the innings with a century stand with Towhid after Bangladesh lost four wickets for 59 runs.

Although he didn't pick a wicket, he was economical with the ball. He also skillfully managed his spin heavy inexperienced attack and delivered a much needed victory.

The Bangladesh team will now fly back home and will play a limited overs series at home against New Zealand at home.

New Zealand have rested most of their players from the World Cup squad and Shakib hinted that Bangladesh could also do something like that.

Tamim Iqbal is expected to take part in the series given that he has completely recovered from his issues with back pain. The veteran Mahmudullah could also get a call up to the squad.

India, on the other hand, will play the final of the Asia Cup against hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo on 17 September.
