Ruling AL MP Liton shot dead in his drawing room

Ruling Bangladesh Awami League MP for Gaibandha's Sundarganj constituency Manjurul Islam Liton was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Gaibandha on Saturday.

Hit by two bullets in his chest in the drawing room of his house in Gaibandha, the MP was rushed to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died.

Head of the hospital’s surgery department Bimal Chandra Roy told the Prothom Alo that Liton was admitted to the hospital around 6:45pm and succumbed to his injuries around 7:30pm.

Earlier, talking to the Prothom Alo, Gaibandha police super Ashraful Islam said the MP’s wife had informed him over phone about the shooting.

Locals said three youths went to the MP’s residence at Bamandanga of Sundarganj around 5:45pm on a motorbike. Two of them walked into the drawing room and opened fire on the MP who was sitting there.

According to a few witnesses, they heard sounds of three gunshots.

The youths fled the scene on the motorbike immediately after the gunshots.

The Gaibandha police super said the MP was hit by two bullets in his chest.

Liton made headlines after shooting a minor boy, Shourav, 8, son of Sazu Miah of Gopalcharan village in the upazila, on 2 October last year.

The police arrested the AL MP on 15 October on charges of shooting the boy.

He was released on bail on 8 November.
